We are pleased to advertise: Audibel is the first private company to sponsor the 24th edition of the Surdolympics, which will take place in Brazil in 2022. This is a historical moment, in which, for the first time, a Latin American country will host the event !
The games will take place from May 1st to 15th, in the city of Caxias do Sul (RS), with a capacity of approximately 15,000 spectators. In addition, the competitions will be broadcast online, with free access worldwide.
All 21 sports will have Libras and International Sign Language interpreters. There are about 6,000 athletes, not counting the members of the delegations! And yet, the event has little visibility.
You may be wondering: but why are the Deaf-Olympic Games separate from the Paralympic Games? This is an important issue, as it concerns the very needs of the deaf community.
Deaf people with severe hearing loss are part of a linguistic and cultural minority, especially when they do not use (or are without) hearing aids. However, when competing with other deaf people, their communication difficulties disappear, since deaf athletes are able to interact with each other freely, as equals. In addition, auditory signals are replaced by visual ones. And all games are supported by interpreters.
The biggest restriction imposed on participating in the Deaflympic Games is that the athlete have a loss of at least 55 decibels in their best ear. And the absence of hearing aids at the event contributes to this greater equality among athletes.
Therefore, it is important to understand that being outside the Paralympics does not harm the social inclusion of the deaf. In fact, it favors your sports practice. What harms athletes, in fact, is the lack of financial incentives and the low visibility given to the event. This is yet another reason why we are so proud of our presence as a sponsoring brand – the first to embark on the 2022 edition!
